South Austin Guide: Eat Your Heart Out in 78745

Craving a croissant? Hankering for a hamburger? Pining for some pizza? Itching for enchiladas? All jokes aside, we’re not kidding when we say that the 78745 neighborhood has some of Austin’s best cuisine. And that’s one of our favorite parts about living in Austin! With so many good options right in our neighborhood we wanted to share some of our FAVE places to go on a date, as a family, or to hang out with friends.

Austin Java – Start your day with a Honey Nut Latte and end with a glass of Pinot Noir at Austin’s favorite cafe and coffee shop. Austin Java started in 1995 and has grown to include six locations, but the one on Manchaca is our favorite. Offering everything from benedicts and omelettes to dinner classics like pasta and burgers; Austin Java is a beloved neighborhood establishment that values “people over products.” Bring your laptop and work the day away, grab a quick lunch, or unwind after a long day. // Address: 5404 Manchaca Rd.

We love the Trio Dip + Chopped Brisket Sandwich

Aviator Pizza and Drafthouse – Name a more iconic pair than pizza and beer. We’ll wait. Aviator Pizza & Drafthouse offers speciality pizzas like Bacon Double Cheeseburger (tastes like it sounds) or the South Austin pizza complete with goat cheese, prosciutto, and arugula. Build-your-own pizzas, sandwiches, calzones, and salads are also on the menu. We tend to frequent their happy hour from three to six for a dollar off select pints and wines. // Address: 6501 S Congress Ave #1-105

We LOVE the Sriacha brussel sprouts + goat cheese pie + Zilker Salad with Proscuito

Evangeline Cafe – You know it’s going to be good cajun food when the chef and owner is from Louisiana. Evangeline Cafe is the spot for authentic Cajun food in Austin. Hands down. Frequently appearing on “best of Austin” lists, Evangeline serves up Cajun classics like gumbo, crawfish, and even chicken fried gator! Enjoy one of these stick-to-your-ribs kinds of meals to the tune of live music, almost every evening. // Address: 8106 Brodie Ln

We love the stuffed black drum- wild caught and Gray loves the alligator bites

Casa Linda Taqueria – Nestled inside a convenience store is the beloved Casa Linda Taqueria. Open daily from early morning to evening (Sundays open until 2 pm) Casa Linda provides quick, delicious, and inexpensive tacos. One Yelp reviewer put it best, “The prices are affordable, the staff is friendly, and the tacos are scrumptious!” Enough said. // Address: 623 W Dittmar Rd

We love the breakfast tacos, the torta and the SPICY green sauce ;)

The Little Darlin – The Little Darlin is the spot to be if you want to play a game of pool with some friends, enjoy a delicious meal al fresco, or spend the day listening to live music with a drink in hand. And although it’s technically a bar, the menu is a far cry from “bar food.” We love the kale caesar salad, chicken and dumplings, and pimento cheese croquettes! // Address: 6507 Circle S Rd

We love their brunch and pimento cheese croquettes, yum!

Taco Ranch – Whether you celebrate margarita Monday, taco Tuesday, or queso everyday, Taco Ranch is here for you. Although, not technically in 45 it has become a staple in our weekly eating, so we included it anyway. So go ahead, eat in or drive through for a quick meal made from scratch and with only the freshest ingredients. Their menu of classic Tex-Mex fare includes tacos, quesadillas, burritos, tostadas, taco salads, nachos, and more! Don’t forget to try the famous Ranch Dip – queso complete with beef, guac, and sour cream. You can thank us later! // Address: 5033 W US Hwy 290 Service Rd

We love their breakfast tacos and their salsa is killer!

Thicket – This food truck park holds a special place in our hearts. The Thicket is 78745’s neighborhood spot for local food, live music, and fun with friends and family. It is also where we hold our block parties! Vendors at the Thicket include Artipasta, Atia’s Kitchen, Blue Corn Shack, Grace Tamale House, Liberty Press Kitchen, Revolution Vegan Kitchen, and The Perfect Bite – so there is truly something for everybody. Gather your neighbors and head to the Thicket for some serious fun for the whole entire family.

Too many good options we recommend trying them all! <3
