Ever wonder how (and where) things like metal staircase rails, hood vents, and furniture are made? Enter MetalWork Austin: a custom metal fabrication shop that focuses on creating unique architectural details, interior furnishings, and metal art; locally owned and operated by Ryan Scott-Nairns.

Ryan was inspired by his uncle, a welder and fabricator who worked on everything from power plants and space shuttle parts to metal sculptures and art cars. In his late teens, Ryan decided to follow in his uncle’s footsteps. He took a metal sculpture class at ACC and from there pursued a degree in metal arts. After gaining experience working in metal shops, blacksmithing, and creating decorative ironwork; he decided to set out on his own.

Ryan says, “The best thing about my job is that it’s a never-ending learning process. You can study endlessly and still not know everything. I never know what challenging or interesting items our clients will request. We have designed and built so many unique items, like a cactus cabinet, a copper vent hood, and even a hanging library with a catwalk!”

We met Ryan and his wife Marie through our mutual friends and neighbors and hit it off from the start. As South Austin residents, Ryan and Marie enjoy every bit of what 78745 has to offer, from its restaurants and entertainment to its sense of togetherness.

“We love South Austin because it’s a very neighborly community. I like working with other local small businesses and there’s a strong sense of camaraderie between the entrepreneurs here. We all are very supportive of each other.”

And it’s easy to support MetalWork Austin when all of their creations are unique, beautiful, and made to last. We work with Ryan and his team to incorporate his designs into the houses we renovate and are always recommending MetalWork to clients who are remodeling their new homes.

So if you’re in the market for a beautiful staircase railing, a one-of-a-kind kitchen table the whole family can gather round, or even want a piece of metal art to make a statement; look no further than MetalWork Austin.

A Letter to Ivy.

1 year, 12 months, 365 days, 8760 hours, 525,600 minutes, 31,536,000 seconds with you! They say that the days are long and the years are short, and this could not be more true. It feels like just yesterday Gray and I were awaiting (not so patiently) the arrival of you – our sweet little girl.

So much has happened in the last year. We’ve learned a lot about what it means to become parents, we’ve experienced so many emotions that no one could really brace us for. It’s been challenging, beautiful, terrifying and so incredibly rewarding all at the same time. It’s hard to put into words just how becoming your parents has made us feel but here goes nothing.

Joy- I’ve never felt more joy than when you became our daughter. My heart swells with happiness and the purest form of joy when you give me kisses. It has been amazing experiencing so many of your firsts – like rolling over for the first time, calling out our names, playing tug-o-war with Duff, the list goes on. There is nothing I love more than when you hug me back and squeeze extra tight just because you want to.

Pride- You are so smart little one and I feel so much pride watching you learn new things, seeing how excited you are to see an animal (even an ugly old blackbird) and seeing you clap your hands with joy when something clicks for you – its the best. We are so incredibly proud to be your parents and we can't wait to watch you grow and shine. Your light is by far the brightest.

Love- What a fitting name Ivy Love. You embody all that is love. You are so kind to others, you share, you smile, you have such a tender heart. When you wake up, you snuggle me and reach for your “Dada” because you missed him and want to give him morning snuggles. You are overflowing with love and there has been no greater love than getting blessed to be your parents.

Laughter- You are so silly, you make the funniest noises, you copy everything we do and you fill our lives with lots of laughter.

Adventure- Becoming your parents and watching you grow into your little personality is nothing short of an adventure. I love watching how you test your limits, you find the thrill in trying new things and being silly with your Dad. Becoming a parent was not easy but it is by far our greatest decision!

The list could go on and on but Happy Birthday sweet girl we love you more than you will ever know, in circles and beyond.

Love - Mom

Home Tour: 7708 Forest Wood Rd.

Situated on over half an acre in 78745, 7708 Forest Wood Rd is a farmhouse lovers dream. Built in the ’50s, this house has lived an eventful life thus far. In 2010, an accidental fire broke out in the kitchen. Luckily, the 80-year-old owner wasn’t home at the time any d only part of the house was affected. Even so, the house went through an extensive rebuild to eliminate all traces of the fire, with attention to every single detail of the original house so that the owner could return to her home as she knew it.

The design layout, the fireplace, the hardwood floors, the front and south walls, and the carport are all original to the house. Everything else that had any fire or smoke exposure was replaced. As a result, you have a home with the charm of a 1950’s build with the modern efficiencies of a new build.

Upgrades to the home include:

  • Removed and rebuilt roof

  • Spray foam insulation in all walls and attic

  • Interior walls completely rebuilt with new wood

  • Replaced all windows with energy efficient windows

  • Soft-close cabinets and drawers

And that’s not even the coolest part. The property also contains an uncompleted back house that was built in the ’70s. With solid bones, ready-to-use plumbing, and wired for electricity, this bonus addition is a great place for a shop, studio, guest house, or office. The options are limitless!

7708 Forest Wood Rd., has been owned by the same family since it was built and has mostly remained unoccupied since the rebuild took place.

Take a look at the video above to see this unique beauty for yourself!
